Bounce and Rhyme: Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear!

Songs and fingerplays are a regular part of library storytimes for young children. We use them because they are great for teaching pre-reading skills, including phonemic awareness (the ability to hear and play with the smaller sounds that make up word). It’s great when a parent or caregiver can bring a child to library storytimes, but sometimes that’s hard to do. Don’t worry though–you can have language fun all day long at home!

The Bounce and Rhyme series will show you how to do some great songs, action rhymes and fingerplays. For instance, Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear not only encourages phonemic awareness with its rhyming text, but also helps teach your child how to follow instructions.

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear

(Do whatever gestures, motions the song says)

Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn around.

Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch the ground.

Teddy bear, teddy bear, reach up high.

Teddy bear, teddy bear, hide your eyes.

Teddy bear, teddy bear, where’s your nose?

Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch your toes.

Teddy bear, teddy bear, jump up now.T

eddy bear, teddy bear, take a bow.

Teddy bear, teddy bear make your tail go swish,

Teddy bear, teddy bear, sit down and shhhhhh!
